I’m afraid I didn’t find the article linked too in this post very helpful. This is because it provides incomplete information, and does not provide the context needed to accurately understand the information. Methadone is well tolerated by most people. Opiate dependent people who are in methadone treatment generally live longer than those who are not. The benefits of methadone greatly outweigh the risks.
The “black box warning” mostly relates to warning doctors about overdose risks if the patient is given too much medication too quickly. This is why methadone treatment programs start people off at a low dose and increase doses in line with tolerance levels.
Here is my black box warning: Failing to take the time to really learn about all of your treatment/recovery options including medication-assisted treatment with methadone or buprenorphine can be fatal. Your recovery is that important.
I’m currently in the middle of a series at recoveryhelpdesk.com called 10 Things You Should Know About Methadone. It’s one place to start to learn more.

This was posted by the author of drugwatch.com I think the intent of the site is to give a very general baseline on many drugs. There is obviously much much more to consider with methadone and opiate addiction which is apparent on http://www.recoveryhelpdesk.com/
