Healing a Broken System: Veterans Battling Addiction and Incarceration How many vets battle substance abuse as they cope with the aftermath of living in war zones. This is much like how drugs and alcohol impacted veterans coming back from Vietnam. Great Report. Also See Vietnam Vet Eddie Grijalva’s story.

I can’t believe you wrote about this today – thank you. I am very upset (what else is new, right?) because one of Keven’s closest friends at rehab is a Vet of the war in Iraq. “Joe” has PTSD and other residents warned my son to stay away from him because he was “weird” and “trouble”. Of course Keven didn’t listen to them, he befriended this young man and I got to know him one day when I drove him to the Veteran’s hospital about an hour away. Well, yesterday Joe had to leave the program, he had an episode, and is now in a mental health institute. This is a result of war, not drugs! We send our enlisted soldiers off to war and they come back and get filed away as defects if they are traumatized. 😦
